Hello, again!
Are you ready for what I have to share with the world today? I hope so.
Industrialism has brainwashed us. With the standardization in factories, we've standardized our school systems in hopes of turning out workers for our factories. We are all "cogs in the machine" as Seth Godin describes in The Icarus Deception.
I think it goes beyond just our working lives, though. This reaches into our pocket books and steals our money. The system we live in has conditioned us to be consumers. The system has encouraged us to be content with our lives, not question, and to trust the system as it is.
This brainwashing includes our habits in buying and consuming food and food products. Let's not pretend, much of what we eat today, at least in America, can no longer really be considered food. We are feeding ourselves products that have been made from what was once natural food for our ancestors.
Within that consumption model, the companies do their own research on the safety of their products, and the government trusts them to be honest, as if they have nothing to gain and the research can be considered unbiased. If the government trusts these companies, then the mass media will paint consumers a pretty picture - not to mention the advertising from the companies then allowed to sell these products.
The system continues like this, with brainwashed, unthinking consumers, until someone steps out of the line and begins to question. There has been a large movement for people thinking outside the box. People who have done their research - some literally so - and have found that the messages we are all being sold are false and they are all in the name of profit.
Ah, profit - and I'm sure you thought capitalism was the best system in the world. Heck, America is the greatest country in the world, right? Well, I don't think so anymore, and I'm here to challenge you to think differently about it, too. If it all comes down to profit, who is really winning? I can tell you, it is not the consumers.
If we can turn profit on it's head, and vote for what we want from companies, by voting with our dollars, companies will respond by meeting demand. Let's say you find out that GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) foods may actually be dangerous for your health, and that despite little research these foods have been added to many of the food products (and even the produce section) in our grocery stores. What will you do?
If you want to vote with your dollars, you may consider doing a bit of research and discover the labels that are supposed to show those foods which or organic and contain no GMOs. You stop buying products without these labels and discovery how to buy produce in this way as well. This transfers the power of growth from the GMO growers to the organic growers, as well as those companies that produce more wholesome food for your table.
This is incredibly simple, but difficult in that you have to change your way of thinking about our system and our food. I hope and pray that you consider trying this out, even if only switching a few products at a time. You may be surprised at how many products and companies use GMOs, or don't label to be recognized for such because they don't yet realize the profitability or the marketability that is steadily growing.
And remember most people eat three or more times a day, and therefore, it has the greatest effect on our health. We should strive to feel ourselves wholesome, delicious foods and stay away from processed foods and additives, especially those which have not be thoroughly researched by an unbiased third party with several other replicating the results.
