I’ve recently found that there is a lot of freedom in not
spending your money. I’m told of course
that in saving your money, you secure your future. That’s not really where I’m
going with this though. Actually, I’m going…
To the library!!
Yes, the library. I know, it’s kind of old-fashioned. Or
maybe it’s just because I remember going all the time as a kid (because guess
what, books were expensive back then too!) Or maybe only “poor” people go
there. Well THIS GIRL goes there.
Mostly I go online. I look at all the books I’d like to read
so so much and either decide I’ll wait and read them a bit later, or I put a
hold on them so I can read them when they are available at my local library. It’s
ingenious! And guess what?? If I’m not done reading by the time it’s due back
to the library, I can just go online and extend the period I have it checked
out for.
FOR FREE! (Except of course if for some crazy reason you can’t
return the book by the due date, which you borrowed for free, and they charge
you a very low amount for it being overdue.)
It gets better though!
I know, exciting right?
You can get Audio books, CDs, DVDs (movies and tv shows)
from the library too!!
There is of course a catch. You have to be patient. You have
to be disciplined.
Am I saying you can never ever buy a book, CD, Audio book,
Movie or other DVD ever again.
NO! I’d go crazy! Some things are simply not going to be at
the library. Or plain and simple, you will want to own them. Nothing wrong with
that at all.
The problem is when I go buy a brand-new hard back book for
$30, read it once, just to turn around and either give it away for free, or get
$5 dollars out of it from a used book store or garage sale. I could have read
it for free at the library if I had been patient and waited a few months. (This
applies even more when Christmas or your birthday are coming up as the book
might show up as a gift!)
My point is, why are we spending so much money on
entertainment we can get for free? That money could be better used.
You can save it.
You can invest it.
Vacation, retirement, maybe both.
You could even donate it!
There is most definitely someone (I’m sure there’s more than
one, actually) who could benefit – eat, be clothed, be loved, have shelter,
have education – because you were a bit more disciplined and used your money
more wisely.
Just food for thought. I hope you take it to heart.
